Tesla Model Y - Review, 25,000 Miles Later

Bilar och fordon

We have now put 25,000 miles on our LR AWD Tesla Model Y. What a better time than now to do a review with so many miles.
We have owned this Tesla Model Y for 11 months now and the 25k miles are broken out between 8,550 miles of road trips, and 16,450 miles of commute and every day driving.
How has the Tesla Model Y held up during these last 11 months? What has gone wrong, and what has gone great?
Overall, this review is focused on the true cost of owning the Model Y for 25k miles, the maintenance required, my favorite features, as well as the must have accessories.
We have traveled far on 4 road trips now, towed a 3k lb plus trailer, camped in the car, and so much more. I am excited to share with you the unbiased full review of this amazing electric family car.

Nice video. Great job! You are correct when you say it's essential for Tesla to find ways to keep costs down. Compared to your Tesla, the price of my Toyota Prius was half of your Tesla. And my Prius has averaged very close to 50mi/gallon over its 7 year lifetime (my original hybrid battery pack is still going strong, BTW). That means the cost of the energy to run my Prius has been close to your Tesla if you had to pay for your electricity, as most owners would have to do. I hope other viewers don't start flaming me here. I am in NO WAY comparing your Tesla to my Prius in any way other than the cost to go from A to B. But, for those looking for a car to simply get from A to B, my hybrid Prius is a much cheaper alternative.

Great video! I’m just starting to consider a model Y and your experience with significant build quality issues, along with other you tubers’ experiences have basically scared me away from buying one. Has Tesla made it possible to go to a dealership and look at cars on the lot that are pre built? This is the only way I would consider buying one. I’ve got to inspect it and drive it first.

  • John Evans

@Bearded Tesla Guy thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. Is it common for Tesla’s to have that many build quality issues? There is no way I could take a custom order vehicle home until they fixed them. You would think they would have better QC than that.

I am a automotive painter. Bumpers not matching is normal. Some colors or worse then others but normal. It's not a tesla problem. Take a drive around any other dealership and you will find new cars with the bumpers not matching. Even in a body shop we can paint the hole front end or rear-end with the bumpers at the same time out of the same gun, same painter and same paint. And like I said some colors will not match perfectly.

Love your reviews. Very informative. I’m considering purchasing this car. Have watched a few of your reviews. I’ve seen the glass roof as a con in some reviews as the interior gets hot or cold easier. Have you experienced that? Also, you said the roof glass is very tinted, but I’m wondering if it screens out UVA and UVB. Do you know? Thank you.

  • Rick Nash

    Rick Nash

    23 dagar sedan

I'd be interested how you calculate the 12 cents. Is it simply whatever the total number of kilowatt hours divided by the total electrical energy bill, or are you taking the specific line on the electrical bill that says "cost per kilowatt"? Without adding in all the other various charges it can look really cheap. For instance my electrical bill (no EV, no AC); Energy charge 183.7 kWh @ 0.0876 / kWh $16.10 Energy Charge 58.474 kWh @ 0.79810 / kWh $4.67 Administration Charge $6.38 Delivery Distribution Charge $20.49 Transmission Charge $9.93 Balancing Pool Allocation $0.57 Local access fee $5.69 =========================== ---------->Total 63.24 or 26 cents per kWh. =========================== Since there are several fixed costs, it gets cheaper the more that is consumed.

Hi BTG , I love all Your videos. Very friendly voice in depth information and easy to understand. I totally agree Tesla are great cars and technology. I am just not able to accept two things. They save money and less maintenance. Though You might save 100$ in fuel per month , end up paying 100$ extra for insurance. In terms of maintenance, even BMW provides 4 years maintenance free same like Tesla and oil change need to be done only once 12k miles.after four years like premium cars Tesla is also going to be expensive to fix. Maybe lesser than Bmw or Mercedes but We are now sure yet as these modes are relatively new and how much can issues it would give once after warranty 🤷‍♂️

Nice video. I ordered my car and should receive it next week. I have test drove Tesla 4 times before my purchase so take it with a grain of salt. A few negatives i noticed while test driving is: 1. you can’t adjust the headrest. Now that part makes absolutely no sense. I’m not even talking a power adjuster but a regular manual headrest adjustment would be fine with me 2. No blind spot alert system. Huh???? With all the cameras and features in car no blind spot alert. That is very confusing. Yes I know that the touch screen in car shows cars around and if you turn on indicator it the car next to you will turn red on screen. But that’s the only way. There isn’t no audio alert no visual alert by side view mirrors. This car alerts you audio wise for everything but this one telsa didn’t think would be important Now I say this to mention two big cons I have had with car while researching. That being said I still purchased the car. That’s how much I like the car even with those cons. But those two cons are big ones. So test those out among others to make informed decision

So, I keep seeing all of these things highlighting savings. But then I go and hear about tires hitting only 30k and how that's great because they're in a Tesla. I've taken gas car tires to 80k. Granted, they were a nice set of tires. But I have to wonder, if you're buying new rubber every 25-30k doesn't that effectively eat up any fuel cost savings you've potentially accrued? The more of these videos I watch the more I realize that, right now, ice is still superior in terms of what it costs to own overall. I really want electric to be the obvious economical choice. And I think we will get there. Just not quite yet.

@Bearded Tesla Guy an oil change costs me about $55 every 10,000 miles. Fluid flushed are another couple hundred every 50k. Unfortunately, the numbers still don't add up. What did you pay for tires? Replacing your tires twice as often is going to eclipse oil and fluids on an ICE SUV anyway, unfortunately. I paid $700 installed for a set of four Michelin tires that should give me 80k miles of service. If you're just comparing this vehicle to another SUV, it's never going to net you savings unless you're legitimately able to get it well over 500k miles on all original components, and even that's dubious if you're chewing through tires like that. Of course, you get "more car", but that's also why I feel that approaching a Tesla as a "money saving" vehicle is likely the wrong approach. I'd have to be comparing this to a more luxury vehicle for these numbers to add up. Based on what the Tesla can do, and really what it is, maybe that is the more fair comparison, but I feel like the average person worrying about costs isn't necessarily putting luxury vehicles toe to toe in their number crunch. Maybe that's just me haha. For my valuations, which I didn't even mention before, here in MA, we pay about $.24 per kWh delivered. Gasoline at the pump yesterday was $2.53. Like I said, I really want the numbers to make sense for us. They just really don't. We are looking at a used model S in the 2016-2017 make because I can find those with unlimited super charging, but even those numbers barely make sense since the car would still be around $40-45k. Looking at a RAV4 prime, and even those numbers don't make sense, even with the tax rebates, compared to just a standard RAV4. And if we are willing to buy 2-3 years used, we will literally never make up the savings. Kinda depressing lol.

Thats just tires and gas vs electric though. You are not considering the other maintenance items in an ICE car that adds up in that same time. No tune ups, no fluid flushes, no oil changes, etc. Tires are going to cost more, anyone saying different is not being honest about it. Everything else is way cheaper.

Comparing to a well equipped Honda Accord that averages 30 MPG combined and 50 dollar oil changes, I still don't see the value for a commuter car. The staggering Tesla depreciation is still outweighing the cost savings, but I think the gap will shrink over time. Tesla is definitely a solid company and their cars are quite nice.

I agree with you about the heavy, bumpy ride of the Y. I’ve been waiting for my Y for almost 2 years (LR RWD- lol). So, I rented a model Y (Turo) for 4 days. Loved everything about it, EXCEPT the ride. It was hard, bumpy, jarring. Sadly, the ride was worse than most cars I’ve owned, from $20k to 50k. Not even close to my old $35000/45,000 BMWs. I LOVE Tesla. LOVE. But a $50k car with poor suspension? How are we supposed to think about this? Any advice about how to sell this to my wife?

The reason the tires were "terrible" is most likely because they are summer tires. In anything other than really cold winter conditions summer tiers are the best. I used to live in Houston Tx and now live in Dallas and I run summer tires on my car all year round and love them. Except when we had that snow storm a few weeks ago. During that time I had absolutely no traction at all. But I love summer tiers for their grip. Also you said "30k miles on a gas car doesn't sound good" it all depends on the tires. Super sporty summer tires usually last around that maybe a little less (usually i get anywhere from 20k to 30 miles)

And did you pay for the recommended 10,000 mile service ~$450.00? if you purchase the car thru Tesla, the aggreemnet are typically more expensive (doller rate per $1,000 loaned) than other lowest loans (kia has many .9% ) loans with 5 year bumper to bumper warantee.

Long term EV ownership is still cheaper than gas even with initial higher costs of Tesla’s. Especially if you were lucky to get an earlier tax credit (or buying a brand that still can offer them). Also, long term maintenance is so low. EVs are better literally in every way from driving experience to cost of ownership. Costs and environmental impacts of producing electricity still lower than pumping crude oil, distilling gasoline, transporting it, etc. and when figuring in % energy conversion from liquid gas to vehicle movement. Love my Tesla. Never going back.

@Bearded Tesla Guy agreed! I drove from Manhattan to Cleveland and from Manhattan to Denver x2 in my model 3. The stops were very welcome for me to stretch and get a soda & snacks. And honestly only a few were very long. Most times I was ready for lunch or something to kill time anyway. And still 90%++ of the time I charge with my level 2 in my garage and rarely if ever do I go more than I have enough range for. It’s like charging our phones really, and most people give that no thought. EVs just require changing 100+ years of habit (fueling). I just put $64 of gas in my V8 F150 I still use for work and towing... so yeah, I’ll take the EV any day.

  • Bearded Tesla Guy

    Bearded Tesla Guy

    2 månader sedan

I’m in the same boat. The only factor that makes it worse than gas is the charging time, but only on road trips. I personally appreciate the stops to stretch, but some people don’t like that. Charging and range will continue to get better over time though

  • John Resciniti

I think Teslas being harder on tires is a very broad stroke to make. Types of tires, and driving habits are most likely. I've had BFG-ATs on a large, lifted, off roading SUV that lasted 50k and cost hundreds per tire, also had $80 all seasons on a subaru that last 20k. Also, you go from a hybrid toyota to a 0-60 in 5 second tesla, you're gonna have some fun and eat some tires.

  • Bearded Tesla Guy

    Bearded Tesla Guy

    2 månader sedan

It’s just an observation and fact. It’s a cost to be aware of because there’s so little maintenance to worry about. This car does eat tires, and people may not be used to it when the average tire on the market is a 40k rated tire.

My kids are 1, 3 and 6 -Can you tell me more about the warranty? I saw on tesla website that the Y comes with 80000km or 4 years. The battery comes with 192000km or 8 years.. Can the warranty be extended? I’m actually living in France. Hope to hear from you. Keep on posting Regards Yannick
